Jefferson Zane was born in Quindaro, Kansas after the removal of the Wyandot tribe from Ohio in 1843. Jefferson was orphaned when his parents John and Teresa Zane died in 1856. Approximately 200 Wyandots relocated in Ottawa County, Indian Territory in Oklahoma from 1870-1872. Zane eventually chose to go to Cherokee territory and married a Delaware woman, Matilda Secondine. Matilda's father James Secondine had been a chief of the Delawares. In 1902, Jefferson submitted to the Dawes Commission to become a Cherokee citizen by adoption.
