Get a Card

Eligibility

Library cards are free to anyone in the Kansas City metro and several Northeast Kansas Library System cities. Visit a library branch for a complete list of eligible areas. Individuals outside the eligible areas can get a card by paying an annual fee of $30.

You must have proof of current address and photo identification to obtain a card. You can use mail received within the last 30 days as proof of address.

For children under 12 years of age, a parent or guardian must sign the library card application

You can ask for a library card application at any library branch or download one to bring with you.

Card Types

If you are able to provide all required items, your card will have full privileges and you will be able to begin checking out materials and using library services.

If you are a child under 12 years of age applying for a card without a parent or guardian to sign for it, then you can receive a limited privilege card.  This allows for two juvenile books to be checked out at one time. No DVDs, blu-rays, or other non-book items are allowed. You can use most library services.

If you live in a temporary residence, do not have a photo ID, or do not have proof of address, you can get a temporary card until you can provide needed items or proof of long-term residency. You are allowed to check out five items at one time and use most library services.

Card Use

You must use your own card to check out or renew materials or to use some library services. You may use your card to sign up to borrow materials at other metro libraries. KCKPL requires patrons to renew library cards every three years. We ask that you pay any fees upon renewal. Lost cards may be replaced for $1. Keep your contact information current and report lost or stolen cards immediately.
