For the month of April, we will be showing movies set in jail. The opportunity for escape is ever present in the genre, but these films will have the added wrinkle of depicting or expressing the need for rehabilitation and reform.
On this night, we are watching Frank Darabont's 1994 film "The Shawshank Redemption" starring Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman, and Bob Gunton. It is rated R.
Imprisoned in the 1940s for the double murder of his wife and her lover, upstanding banker Andy Dufresne begins a new life at the Shawshank prison, where he puts his accounting skills to work for an amoral warden. During his long stretch in prison, Dufresne comes to be admired by the other inmates – including an older prisoner named Red – for his integrity and unquenchable sense of hope.
