Learn about Nicodemus, Kansas, the oldest and only remaining Black settlement west of the Mississippi River and Junius G. Groves, the Potato King, who came to Kansas as an Exoduster in 1879 with 90¢ in his pocket. At age 19, he first worked at the meat packing houses in Armourdale, Kansas, and later moved to Edwardsville, Kansas, where he engaged in sharecropping.
