For the month of April, we will be showing movies set in jail. The opportunity for escape is ever present in the genre, but these films will have the added wrinkle of depicting or expressing the need for rehabilitation or reform.
On this night, we are watching Jules Dassin's 1947 film "Brute Force" starring Burt Lancaster, Hume Cronyn, and Charles Bickford.
Timeworn Joe Collins and his fellow inmates live under the heavy thumb of the sadistic, power-tripping guard Captain Munsey. Only Collins’ dreams of escape keep him going, but how can he possibly bust out of Munsey’s chains?
