Well known for her freehand silhouettes of people and pets, Joyce Yarbrough's repertoire continues to evolve to include plants, places and many facets of nature including feathers, butterflies, and mandalas of intricate design. Having won awards with a variety of media besides papercutting, her creations may also be done with watercolor or pastel or a combination of mediums.
"Nature is the source of inspiration for my art. I cut paper with scissors to create 'one of a kind art.' Using no patterns, only paper and scissors, I 'draw' a contour drawing with my scissors. I try to capture the ‘life’ of my botanical and nature silhouettes with a 3D effect."
Joyce has exhibited her art in many invitational and juried exhibitions, and historical venues nationally. Internationally her silhouettes have traveled to China, Poland, and Germany. Joyce was invited to attend China’s 2007 International Festival of Paper Arts. Her scissors-cut paper art, part of permanent museum collections in China and the USA, can be found in homes all over the world.
A graduate of Missouri University, Joyce continued her art education at Kansas City Art Institute, while she was at Hallmark Cards. She has also worked as a marketing co-ordinator, art director, and educational illustrator. Serving as an art show juror, demonstrating, teaching arts programs, she even incorporated art as a literacy tutor. A former board member of the Guild of American Papercutters, Joyce is a member of American Women Artists, Greater St Louis Artists Association and Columbia Art League.
